We are looking forward to sharing our exciting learning in Year 1. On our page you will be able to access resources that are regularly used in lessons. We will be updating this page on a regular basis.
About Year 1
Year 1 is a big transition from Reception. Your support as partners in teaching your child is crucial to their success. We provide a positive learning environment where all children are encouraged to become independent learners as well as engaged and challenged in their learning in order to reach their full potential.
In Year 1 the children are taught through formal lessons and learning through play is gradually filtered out. We currently use the RWI Phonics Scheme to teach daily phonics.
Phonics, Reading, Writing and Maths become the core focus of our learning.
• Phonics: Every child in Year 1 is required to take the Phonics Screening Test at the end of Year 1.
• Reading: Reading helps to access all other parts of the curriculum as well as accelerating learning.
• Writing: Children are expected to write full sentences using correct punctuation and correct grammar.
• Maths: Children are expected to be secure in number recognition, formation and counting forwards and backwards to 100.
Number bonds are an important foundation for Maths in Year 1. Children are also expected to be secure in counting in 2s, 5s and 10s by end of Year 1.
This helps prepare them for the challenges of the Key Stage 1 SATs at the end of Year 2.
We offer pupils the opportunity to enjoy and experience a stimulating environment which motivates them to work hard and become high achievers. We provide a broad, balanced and creative curriculum which caters for the needs of all children.
We encourage parents to engage with children to extend their learning by discussing their day at school and also extend their learning using websites like these below:

Helping your child
Attendance and punctuality are particularly crucial in Year 1 as we provide the foundation for their learning in Maths, English and other subjects, as well as in school routines and rules.
Parental support is an essential part of the pupils’ development. Please support your children in completing their homework regularly as we use homework as a challenge and extension of what we have been learning in class. Make sure you listen to your children read everyday and continually refer to the sound and word lists given to develop their reading and writing skills.
